If you love a day at the races, you’ll know it’s synonymous with style and elegance and here at Platt’s we want to make sure that you’re dressed for the occasion.
Depending on which race event you’ll be attending, you may have to adhere to a dress code, but don’t let that put you off, it’s just a great excuse to look your best.
Most racecourses simply ask that you dress smartly but seeing as the women make such an effort – especially on ladies day – we believe the men should too.
If the dress code is ‘smart’, you can’t go wrong with a standard two or three piece suit with a brightly coloured tie. You can also accessories with a pocket square.
Navy, blue, tan, brown and light or charcoal grey are all good colour choices, but avoid black.
Tweed is also enjoying a resurgence and is set to be bigger than ever this summer with some great looks out there – try teaming a tweed waistcoat with a brightly coloured tie.
As a general rule of thumb, avoid jeans at all costs. Denim doesn’t fall into the ‘smart’ bracket and you risk being turned away at the gate.
Royal Ascot or Epsom Derby are vey different. Steeped in 300 years of pageantry, fashion and tradition, event goers must dress up to the occasion.
A ticket in the Royal Enclosures will require full traditional morning dress.
For this, a black or grey morning coat can be worn with grey, striped trousers, a grey waistcoat and a white standard-collar or wing-collar shirt with a restrained grey neckerchief or silver grey tie – cravats and bow ties are strictly not permitted.
Black polished shoes must perfectly match the trousers, while the crowning accessory is the grey top hat.
However, for added panache you may want to show off your style with a brightly coloured waistcoat, often fashioned by members of the Royal Family.
Whatever your style, the important thing is to wear with confidence and have fun! Royal Ascot and the Epsom Derby come round just once a year so make the most of it.
For any other race event, if you’re not sure what the dress code is then check with the racecourse – this information can usually be found online.
